Through Therapy You Can Heal

That is the waiting room wall, painted by hand. It was there before this website, and it says what this place is for better than anything written for a website could. You sit beside it while you wait, and the doors next to it open into the group room.

How the counseling works here

The practice

In Hale since 2012

Blooming Consultants is a private counseling practice in Hale, serving Iosco County and the surrounding Sunrise Side. Ann Marie Shay founded it in 2012 and has worked with more than 10,000 people since, from age three to eighty-eight.

Northeast Michigan does not have enough mental health care. Iosco, Ogemaw and Oscoda counties are federally designated a High Needs Mental Health Professional Shortage Area, and roughly 45,000 people here are counted as underserved. That is the gap this practice exists to close, one person at a time.

Getting started

How it works

  1. Tell us how to reach you.

Fill in the short form or call the office. You do not need to explain everything up front.

  2. We call you back.

We will ask a few questions about what you are looking for and get you booked for a first appointment.

Office hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

  3. You start.

The first session is about getting to know each other and deciding together what you want to work on. What to expect at a first appointment is set out in full, including what to bring.

There is no booking form on this site. Appointments are made on the phone, after a short conversation with a person.

Reviews

What people say

People who have been here have written about it on Google, in their own words and on their own time. None of it is copied onto this site: a review is a person's account of their own care, and it stays theirs. Read them where they were written.

Common questions

Something else? Call (989) 728-2364 and ask.

Who is the right therapist for me?

The right therapist is the one you can be honest with, and that matters more than any list of letters. Call, ask what you want to ask, and see how the conversation feels. If it is not a fit, say so, and we will help you look elsewhere.

Do you take my insurance?

We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Complete, Priority Health, McLaren and HAP, and we also take commercial insurance, cash, check, credit card and health savings plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan rather than only on your insurer, so call the number on the back of your card and ask what your outpatient mental health benefit is. If you are on Medicaid, Wellvance is the community mental health authority for this area and is the right first call.

What happens at the first appointment?

Mostly getting to know each other. You will talk about what brought you in and what you would like to be different. There is no expectation that you explain anything you are not ready to.

How long does counseling take?

It depends on what you are working on. Some people come for six to twelve sessions and are finished. Others work on something for longer. You decide that together, and you can ask at any point where you have got to.
